NVR vs DVR: Professional Guide for Businesses
Image quality, storage, maintenance and 5-year cost
Basic difference
DVR (Digital Video Recorder): Analog-to-digital recorder, cameras connected via coaxial cable. NVR (Network Video Recorder): Pure digital recorder, IP cameras connected via network cable.
Image quality
NVR wins by a significant margin - supports 4K, 8MP and above. DVR is limited to Full HD in most cases.
Installation cost
DVR is 20-30% cheaper at initial installation - mainly due to cheaper cameras. But over 5 years: NVR ends up cheaper due to flexibility of adding cameras and upgrades.
Maintenance
NVR can be updated remotely (firmware). DVR usually requires physical presence. A business that self-manages will prefer NVR.
Recommendation for the business
A business with more than 4 cameras, a compound over 200 sqm, or remote-access needs - NVR. A small business (1-4 cameras) on a tight budget - DVR is still reasonable. Request specific advice.
